Week of August 10 - 16 2008
Ehud Olmert’s government’s proposal to the Palestinian negotiation team, as it was published in the "Ha’aretz" newspaper this week, allows us to examine the various positions within the Palestinian Authority as well as the Palestinian organizations in regards to the proposal and its implications on the current situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The proposal was published as an Israeli proposal rather than a reflection of the negotiations between the parties that have been ongoing... more

Week of August 3 - 9 2008
As far as the leadership of the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah isconcerned, this past week symbolized the unofficial end of the AnnapolisProcess, without any political achievements for the Palestinians. While thePA leadership does not admit this and continues to act as if "business asusual", the latest round of talks in Washington made it clear to the Head of the Palestinian Negotiations Team Ahmed Qurei (Abu Allaa) and to the Head of the PLO Negotiations Department Sa’eb A’rikat, that in light of... more

Week of July 27 - August 2 2008
This past week saw the eradication of Fatah as a political party and as an organization in the Gaza Strip. Hamas’ takeover of the Gaza Strip in June 2007 symbolized the transfer of authority to Hamas, turning it from a strong organization that has held veto power over the actions of the Palestinian Authority throughout the course of the Intifada, to the main address and the new ruler, which all other organizations including Fatah must answer to. This past week was another dramatic phase in this process. Hamas used the... more

Week of July 20 - 26 2008
Two central events dominated this past week, both occurring last Friday in the Gaza Strip: the first was an explosion of a car-bomb near the house of Dr. Marwan Abu Ras, the head of the "Association of Palestine’s Religious Wise Men" – Hamas’ superior religious body in the Palestinian Territories, who is also a Member of Parliament from Hamas. Neither Abu Ras nor any of his household members were hurt but the house and its surrounding were heavily damaged. The second ... more

Week of July 13 - 19 2008
Despite the impression that the prisoners’ exchange deal between Israel and the Hizbullah that was implemented this past week took place in the bilateral arena between Israel and Lebanon, it actually has significant ramifications also in the Israeli-Palestinian arena. Such ramifications relate both to the expected negotiations regarding a prisoners’ exchange deal between Israel and Hamas to release the Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, as well as regarding the wider future negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian leadership. The central characteristic of the prisoners’... more

Week of July 6 - 12 2008
This past week, in the beginning of which Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas visited Damascus, clearly showed the political crisis in which the PA found itself following the stabilization of the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip. Abbas went to Damascus in an attempt to examine the extent of progress in Israeli-Syrian negotiations, as well as to understand Syria’s priorities regarding the Gaza Strip and regarding inter... more

Week of June 29 - July 5 2008
This past week has been the third of the "Tahdia’ah", the ceasefire agreement regarding the Gaza Strip between Israel and Hamas. The three past weeks have witnessed sporadic breaches of the ceasefire, including a few rockets and mortars fired from the Gaza Strip (about three such incidents each week) and a few fire incidents by the IDF against Palestinian fishermen who strayed away from shore and against Palestinian residents coming close to the surrounding fence, as well as partial closing of the Sufa and Karni crossings (an average of three days a week).... more

Week of June 22 - 28 2008
This past week was the first week in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. As in past ceasefires in the Gaza Strip, when it was still under the Palestinian Authority, this week was characterized by attempts of both sides – as well as of other Palestinian organizations in the Gaza Strip – to examine and demark the ’red lines’ of the ceasefire agreement, as well as to define the response mechanisms to what each side views as breaches implemented by the other side. As was to be expected, the first challenge to the ceasefire came from the... more

Week of June 15 - 21 2008
The ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas, which entered into force last Thursday, is creating a new dynamic that has ramifications way beyond the local security calm in the Gaza Strip. This ceasefire is likely to dramatically influence the Israeli-Palestinian relations, especially as far as the traditional relationships between Israel and the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, led by Abbas and other Fatah seniors are concerned. Against the background of the... more

Week of June 8 - 14 2008
Two parallel trends that have been developing over the past week are likely to create the framework for the expected events and developments as far as the situation between the West Bank and the Gaza Strip is concerned, as well as regarding the relations between Israel and the two ruling authorities in these two regions. These two trends are the call made by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas ten days ago to renew dialogue, negotiations and reconciliation between Fatah and Hamas, and in parallel the emerging ceasefire "tahadiya" agreement between Hamas... more
