Week
of December 28 - January 3 2009 Last Saturday marked a week since the beginning of the military confrontation between Israel and the Hamas in the Gaza Strip. This is the first war between Israel and a governmental entity with Islamic Sunni characteristics. This fact is evident, among others, in the scale of public engagement in Arab and Islamic countries in favor of Hamas, often against the position of the regimes in those countries. Beyond the question of a future, local arrangement in the Gaza Strip, the current confrontation constitutes an important test in various... more |

Week
of December 21 - 27 2008 The Israeli operation in the Gaza Strip, beginning Saturday afternoon, seems to be one of the most significant events in the history of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Throughout the past eight years, Israel had executed several military air, ground and combined operations in the Gaza Strip, resulting in over 4,000 Palestinian casualties in the Gaza Strip alone. Nevertheless, the current operation, which is the first systematic attack on the Hamas regime symbols in the Gaza Strip, resulting in 1000 casualties (of them 290 killed at the time of this report), involving massive use of various aircrafts (as well as possible ground operations in the near future), is turning into a crucial event, resembling only several other exceptional events in the history of the conflict, such as... more |

Week
of December 14 - 20 2008 During the large Gaza Strip rally held last Sunday to mark the Hamas’ 21st anniversary, several of the organization’s founders were on the main stage. These were activists of the Muslim Bretheren organization in the Gaza Strip as far back as the 1970’s and 80’s, and were among the main confidants in establishing the organization of founder and spiritual leader Ahmad Yasin, who was assassinated by Israel in 2004. Sheiks AbdalFatah Dukhan, Ibrahim alYazuri, I’ssa Nashar and others addressed the crowd of hundreds of thousands, including Hamas supporters and others, and declared a “Baya’ah”: a public oath of loyalty to the world organization of the Muslim Bretheren. The oath is a... more |

Week
of December 7 - 13 2008 Over the past week, for the first time in a long while, the internal conflict within the Palestinian Authority (PA) in RamAllaa surfaced, in the form of a power struggle between Mahmud Abbas, Chairman of the PA and Ahmed Qurei’ (Abu Allaa), who is currently leading the opposition to the first, as well as to Salam Fayad’s government identified with Abbas. While the main internal Palestinian battle remains between the Fatah and Hamas, in actuality inter-Fatah conflicts between Abbas and Farouq alQadoumiand others described in earlier reports, are no less influential on the... more |

Week
of November 30 - December 6 2008 Two weeks ahead of the official end of the ceasefire [Tahdia’ah] between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip, it seems that both sides [as well as Egypt] are interested in its extension. Israel is interested in stopping mortar and missile shelling during the election campaign, while Hamas wants to consolidate its rule over the Gaza Strip. Despite this joint interest, other factors undermine the likelihood of ceasefire extension and may lead to escalation. While Hamas can determine the fate of the... more |

Week
of November 23 - 29 2008 The past week was marked by two key issues: the declaration of PA chairman Mahmud Abbas as "President of the Palestinian State" by the PLO Central Council in Ramallah, and new declarations by senior Hamas leader Mahmud a-Zahar, shedding new light on Hamas’ political priorities in the foreseeable future. The presidency declaration was passed at a close session and by a unanimous vote. About half of the... more |

Week
of November 16 - 22 2008 The past week was characterized by extensive Palestinian discussions about the Arab Initiative (Beirut, 2002) and the possibility that it may be the basis for renewed negotiations. The initiative was advertised by the Palestinian Authority in the Israeli and Palestinian press in an attempt to promote it within Israeli public discourse during the Israeli elections. PA chair Mahmud Abbas also discussed it in a Nablus speech last weekend, probably providing the most favorable treatment of the initiative by a Palestinian leader since the launch of the... more |

Week
of November 9 - 15 2008 The failed attempts to initiate the internal Palestinian dialogue in Cairo between Hamas and Fatah last week had led to breaking down any possible inhibitions and limitations between the organizations, as well as what seems as a general confrontation between the two organizations over the Palestinian public opinion. The preliminary communications towards the dialogue, managed by the Egyptian Intelligence Minister O’mar Sulleiman, were based on the assumption that Hamas will eventually not be able to refuse to participate in the... more |

Week
of November 2 - 8 2008 At the end of the previous week, the Egyptians have officially announced the cancellation of the Palestinian internal dialogue that was scheduled for November 9-11th in Cairo. The cancellation followed a letter sent from the four Palestinian organizations currently staying in Cairo: Hamas, the Islamic Jihad, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine General Command led by Ahmed Jibril and the A-sa’qa organization to General O’mar Sulleiman, the Egyptian Intelligence Minister managing the preliminary communications prior to the dialogue, in which they have stated that they are not planning to attend the dialogue’s opening session, blaming the... more |

Week
of October 26 - November 1 2008 As the internal dialogue between Fatah and Hamas in Cairo approaches, set for November 9-11, the organizations have conveyed clear messages as to their intentions. Fatah and the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah have accelerated the implementation of the security plan in the Hebron area, and continued the Hamas operatives’ arrests and pursuit. Hamas, on the other hand, has chosen to hold a ceremony for hundreds of new policemen and officers within its Security Services, held at the "Yaser Arafat Police Academy" in the central part of the city of Gaza. Both organizations are in the midst of a diplomatic war, as Egypt, the mediator, is in its center, and... more |
